This method does work on many Freya-based servers, although on my main it causes an autoban.
The ban only lasts for a few minutes though, so by the time the server has repaired itself you can usually log in again.
The fun part is replacing your name with " " (all spaces) and saying "Server is shutting down for a few minutes to clear out storage/inventory"
Dunno if the name change is visible to others, but it does humor me...
